New rules on alerting & announcing

posted 7 Aug 2013, 10:06 by Colin Sills   [ updated 7 Aug 2013, 10:21 ]
The Laws and Ethics Committee of the EBU has revised the rules and guidance on alerting/announcing, permitted understandings and other technical matters, taking effect from 1 August 2013. The revisions are issued as new publications:
  • The Blue Book, which replaces the Orange and Tangerine Books. This is a handbook of EBU Permitted Understandings
  • The White Book, a guide for Tournament Directors, Clubs & Organisers covering all technical matters
  • a revised Summary of Announcing and Alerting for players

To download any of the documents, please click on the links above. Alternatively, visit the Laws & Ethics page of the EBU website.

The new rules on announcing and alerting have minor modifications to the previous version:

  • announcing short (0,1 or 2 cards) minor suit openings
  • announcing the strength of 2NT openings (and announcing the corresponding Stayman/Transfer responses)
  • alerting artificial suit bids above 3NT on first round of bidding (defined as opening bid + 3 calls)

A limited number of printed copies of the announcing/alerting summary will be made available at the CBC playing venues.
